Reviving the heritage of Sasaram, Bihar

revolution against pollution

Revolution Against Pollution targets reviving the heritage and make it a place for local people to visit. In this target, cleanliness drive has been a major player in the game. Past campaign drive has helped to grab the attention of the common public towards heritage sites. This time it was a collaborative effort, joining hands with the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, GNSU,Jamuhar.

The mission was to clean Hasan Shah Suri’s Stepwell which has its historic importance. It is well known for its history, and architectural beauty. It is believed that this area of the tomb was built in 1535 by Sher Shah Suri in remembrance of his father. The stepwell area was used for wazu before Namaaz. It is situated beside the masjid of Hasan Shah Suri. But in the present time, it has lost the vigilance of the government and the public. The stepwell is a square-shaped area, with a verandah in the mid, covered by stairs from two adjacent sides which were designed by Alawal Khan, who also designed the Sher Shah Suri tomb. The garbage disposal is not proper and no regular cleaning is observed in this area.

So coming to the story of Tuesday Morning, we started with a biodegradable black garbage bag and divided ourselves into teams. The first focus was on the plastic wastes, which were mostly mixed up with wet mud. After the plastic wastes, we moved forward to uproot the long grasses and dried twigs of shrubs. Archaeological Survey of India Team helped our youth team in the campaign. We shifted from ground to stairs, the stairs had grown up wild plants with an extremely muddy look, we uprooted the wild plants and mopped each stair.

The next mission was to clean the interiors of the tomb. The tomb area had spits all over the beautiful walls, which made it appear stinky and dirty. We also examined the waste garbage which was accumulated in the mid of the tomb which is a graveyard of Sher Shah Suri’s parents, giving it a filthy look . We struggled to clean as much as we could. In the end, we picked all the trash at one place and handed it over to ASI members for its proper disposal.
